For older children and teens

Contact lenses, when a child is ready

Some older children and teens do well in contact lenses. The doctor decides after an exam, and a parent comes to the fitting.

Your prescription is yours. We give you a copy after your exam and fitting, and you can fill it anywhere.

Contact lenses are medical devices. Worn or cleaned the wrong way, they can lead to an eye infection, so a fitting includes a lesson for the child and a parent, and the doctor explains the risks before anything is ordered.

The fitting

From exam to follow-up

  1. 01

    Step 1: An exam

The doctor checks the eyes and the prescription, and talks with you and your child about whether lenses make sense.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Trial lenses

Your child wears a first pair in the office so we can check the fit and how they feel.

  3. 03

    Step 3: A handling lesson

Your child learns to put lenses in and take them out, and how to clean and replace them. A parent learns too.

  4. 04

    Step 4: A follow-up visit

We check the fit and the health of the eyes after a short time of wear, and again as the doctor advises.

A copy when the fitting is finished

We give you a copy of the contact lens prescription when the fitting is finished. If a seller calls to verify it, we confirm it.

Billing and what to bring

  • How it is billed

A contact lens exam and fitting is billed separately from a routine exam. Some vision plans cover part of it. We check your benefits first, and give you a written estimate if you pay yourself.

    How fees work
  • What to bring

    • Your child's current glasses and any lenses they have

    • Vision and medical insurance cards

    • A list of any eye drops or medicines your child uses

About contact lenses

How old does a child have to be?

There is no set age. The doctor looks at whether your child can look after the lenses, and whether you are both ready.

Can my child sleep in them?

Only if the doctor has told you the lenses are made for it. Sleeping in lenses that are not can raise the chance of an infection.

Can I fill my child's prescription somewhere else?

Yes. You get a copy after the exam and fitting, and you can take it to any seller.
